We are now in the middle of "The Dog Days of Summer" and as to be expected the crappie fishing on Weiss Lake has slowed down. We are still catching some nice keepers early in the morning so we are doing some early morning trips to try to catch a few and get off the water before the heat sets in for the day. We have been out catching crappie using a couple of different methods. We can catch them spider rigging live bait along the river ledges and also catching a few on jigs under the deeper docks. The key to catching crappie this time of year is to slow down! The bite has been really lite! They do not seem to be chasing anything so just let that bait sit in or over the structure. The fish have been holding tight to cover so expect to get hung up some but you will catch some fish. If you fish jigs under docks, the fish seem to be on the deeper docks and near the bottom. A lot of our fish have been caught letting the bait lay on the bottom and then pull it up about 3-4 inches at a time and let it fall back down. Slow presentation is a must! All of this will change in the next few weeks as the temperatures drop and we move into the fall of the year. The crappie will get more aggressive and the action will pick up. We are within a month of the fall crappie season getting started. Remember Alabama Power will drop the lake level 6 feet in the fall/winter so use caution when running your boat on the lake!
